Newark, named for a
castle in Dumbarton, Scotland, is one of the latest cities to join
the Silicon family. The result is a city that blends the old
with the new and fairly new, paying more attention to appearances
and housing offerings that are attracting many high-tech
professionals.
The city,
population 43,043, has planted 15,000 trees everywhere. In
some sections, industry and housing live side by side, which some
may not like. The town works with older industries to butter
them from residential areas. Newark still has many
residents working blue-collar jobs and many outsiders probably still
hold the image of Newark as a blue-collar town. But with the
influx of white-collar workers and professionals, the housing and
social mix has become much more varied and the town has moved up the
scale. |
